Honoring Their Service. Embracing Their Stories.

We Honor Veterans at Connecticut Hospice.

Since opening our doors in 1974 as America’s first hospice, Connecticut Hospice has remained committed to providing expert care grounded in compassion, dignity, and respect.

As part of that commitment, we are proud to partner with We Honor Veterans—a national initiative focused on meeting the unique end-of-life needs of U.S. Military veterans and their families. Through this partnership, we provide specialized care that honors veterans’ service and supports their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

Small Gestures With Big Impacts

Veterans deserve more than care—they deserve recognition, gratitude, and sincere support. Through We Honor Veterans, we have woven small but significant rituals into our services:

    • A flag placed gently at the foot of a veteran’s bed upon their passing
    • Personalized recognition certificates and moments of tribute for veterans receiving inpatient hospice care
    • Special events like our Memorial Day Honor Guard Ceremony, which unite families, patients, and our community to celebrate service and legacy

These moments bring reverence, comfort, and connection to patients and their families during one of life’s most important chapters.

Earning Our Stars

The We Honor Veterans program features five Partner Levels. Each reflects an organization’s ability to provide compassionate and personalized veteran-centric care. As partners advance through these levels (or “earn their stars”), they demonstrate a deepening commitment to and expertise in honoring veterans at the end of life.

Connecticut Hospice is a proud Level 4 Partner, and we continue to expand and enrich the care we provide to those who have served our country.

The Five Levels of Service

Each Partner Level outlines specific goals and activities that help hospices grow their capacity to care for veterans, both within their organizations and in the broader community:

Level 1

Identify patients with military experience and provide veteran-centric education for staff and volunteers.

Level 2

Build organizational capacity to provide quality care to veterans.

Level 3

Develop and strengthen relationships with Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers and other veteran organizations.

Level 4

Increase access to and improve the quality of care for veterans in the community.

Level 5

Expand partnerships with other community organizations and hospice providers to share knowledge and serve as a mentor.
