Dear Rosemary: It is a great honor for me to join with all of those people who commend the work of the Connecticut Hospice, the nation's first and many say its best hospice. I wish to pay tribute to your board of directors for their

August 1, 2002 On Saturday, September 28, 2002, Peter, Paul and Mary will raise their voices in a benefit concert for the Connecticut Hospice at the Mohegan Sun Casino. As a member of Peter, Paul and Mary and an Honorary, albeit proud and active, Board member of Connecticut Hospice, I would like to invite you to this very special and worthwhile event supporting the home of the most amazing flock of angels I've ever encountered in my life, well known as the first Hospice in America. Connecticut Hospice gives heartfelt service to more than 3,800 patients annually. Located in Branford CT, Connecticut Hospice was founded on the premise that both patient and family must have the right, and should be given the information, to make a considered choice regarding care options for people experiencing the final chapter of their life. Hospice brings dignity, heartfelt caring, and state-of-the management to patients and their families. These service, are offered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, regardless of the patients' ability to pay. Over the years, I have had numerous truly spiritual and moving experiences performing for patients and staff at the Connecticut Hospice. I look upon my participation in Hospice work, and my contact with hospice workers and administrators, as a gift that surpasses all others in many, many ways. Particularly since September 11th, people have demonstrated an increased willingness to live and act as a caring family, and, when the possibility arises, to help others in need. In these days when the challenges we face present a competition for funding and resources of all kinds, Connecticut Hospice especially needs support from us all. In the spirit of our own commitment to this important effort, I am inviting you to join Mary Travers, Noel Paul Stookey, and me in an evening guaranteed to touch your heart, and also make what we hope will be a significant contribution to the future efforts of the Connecticut Hospice, as it continues to offer great gifts to those that deserve it most. Thank you in advance for your support of this worthy cause. |

A Letter from our Chairman ... |
||||||
Dear Friends, The dawn of the 21st Century marked the beginning of a new era for The Connecticut Hospice, Inc. Since its inception over 25 years ago as the first American hospice, the organization has grown dramatically, caring for an increasing number of patients and their families with a broadening variety of illnesses. Throughout this last quarter of a century, the caregivers at The Connecticut Hospice, Inc. have learned, through patient and family experiences, the most effective means of providing care, comfort, and peace of mind during such difficult times. The Connecticut Hospice, Inc. has instituted and followed the highest American hospice standards, and it is in this next 25 years that we will take hospice care in America to a higher plateau. Anticipating future needs of patients and their families is crucial to providing the best care possible. Our strategic ally, The John D. Thompson Hospice Institute for Education, Training and Research, Inc. has kept, and continues to keep The Connecticut Hospice, Inc. ahead of this curve. As a center for excellence in palliative care research, we support the improvement and enhancement of hospice care globally, through a greater focus on conveying research findings to the medical and nursing professionals and the lay community of caregivers throughout the state, the nation, and beyond. Pain management and symptom control have always been of top priority at The Connecticut Hospice, Inc. With an ever-changing and constantly expanding myriad of illnesses being cared for, the need for pain control methods and symptom management have become necessary at stages earlier in the illness than traditional hospice home care encompasses. Therefore, CanSupportSM, a unique support system of palliative care and pain and symptom management, was created. CanSupportSM enjoys a unique reputation among physicians because it combines traditional oncological approaches of therapy with palliative modalities, thus supporting the person with advanced disease, regardless of ability to pay. The rapid growth of technology has enabled The Connecticut Hospice, Inc. to provide unique ways to allow more patients and their families to stay at home, using our local Patient Service Office as a link back to the center port in Branford. By keeping a close watch on the advances in transportable medical equipment, The Connecticut Hospice, Inc. ensures that patients who wish to receive home care will have the most effective and most facilitating equipment in the field. Additionally, communication between the patient and family and their caregivers between visits has become more personalized and effective through the use of the PictureTelTM system, a recent advance in video-phone technology. Time is considered
very valuable at The Connecticut Hospice, Inc. Our goal to provide "quality
of life for as long as life lasts" remains unchanged. With a magnificent
new setting at Homeport Cove, patients and their families utilize their
time in a variety of unique and exciting ways. Organized activities, such
as arts, concerts, religious ceremonies, support groups, and special events,
thrive as always. Overnight family rooms are also avaliablefor visiting
or out-of-state family members. Additionally, patients and their families
enjoy leisurely strolls on the beach, participate in sunrises and sunsets
by the healing sea, dangle their feet in the swimming pool, and most importantly,
have the privacy so greatly needed during such trying times.
Frederick Mancheski,
Chairman |
